High-low mismatch irregularity
Edge offset irregularity is an inequality of the edges in joined sheets or pipes before welding, leading to significant eccentric forces and local bending stresses.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The uneven edges in joined sheets or pipes create uneven stresses that affect the weld. These stresses lead to local bending stresses and create eccentric forces that can deform the material.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks during Welding
An edge offset irregularity can lead to uneven stress distributions, which in turn can cause cracks or deformations in the weld. This increases the risk of hot cracks and can affect the strength of the joint.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Before welding begins, all edges must be carefully aligned and parallel to each other. This can be achieved through exact positioning and possibly filling or compensating the edges. A maximum tolerance of 0.5 mm is common. For larger deviations, the component geometry should be checked and corrected.
