Carbide-Free Lower Bainite

A specialized bainite variant where carbon precipitates as fine needles inside the ferrite plates rather than as cementite at the grain boundaries, leading to high toughness at increased strength. It occurs in silicon-alloyed steels.

Carbide-free bainite forms in silicon-alloyed steels. The carbon doesn't precipitate as coarse carbides at grain boundaries, but as fine needles in ferrite. This makes the material tough and strong.

When welding, cooling is the critical point. If you cool too fast, you get hard, crack-prone martensite. If you cool too slowly, the grain coarsens and toughness suffers.

So you have to control the cooling to get the desired microstructure. Stick to the specified cooling times for the material, then it'll be fine.
