Grain Boundary Carbide Network
Carbide networks along the austenite grain boundaries in high-alloy steels or cast iron are brittle barriers that increase failure.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Carbides form at the grain boundaries and form a network. This network is more brittle than the surrounding metal.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The brittle carbide network can lead to cracks and failure, especially under mechanical stress. It increases susceptibility to intergranular failure and can alter the microstructure.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To minimize the risk of carbide networks, pay attention to the correct welding temperature. Avoid overheating and overcooling of the weld seam. For high-alloy steels or cast iron, careful control of the microstructure is essential.
