Carbide particle distribution
Carbide particle distribution describes how hard phases are distributed in the metal matrix. An even distribution prevents local wear and cracks.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Carbide particles are hard and can act as hardening points in the material. Their spatial arrangement influences the mechanical properties of the material.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
An uneven distribution of carbide particles can lead to local wear spots and crack initiation. This increases susceptibility to mechanical stress and can lead to premature material failure.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To ensure good carbide particle distribution, it is important:
• To cool the weld seam so that the microstructure cools evenly (t8/5 between 10 and 20 seconds).
• For high-carbide steels, perform hardness control after welding.
• If necessary, a post-weld heat treatment such as austenitizing can be applied to improve distribution.
