Ceramic Blasting Media

Ceramic blasting media consists of high-strength spheres of zirconia ceramic that offer long service life and low wear in shot blasting. They ensure uniform introduction of compressive residual stresses with high surface quality.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Ceramic blasting media consist of zirconia ceramic, which has very high strength and hardness. These properties ensure that the spheres have a long service life and suffer little wear under high temperatures and pressures. The material structure remains stable, which leads to a uniform introduction of compressive residual stresses.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

The use of ceramic blasting media in shot blasting improves the surface quality of the weld and prevents cracks or unevenness. Low wear means that the blasting media lasts longer and increases the production rate. However, a lack of replacement of the blasting media can lead to overheating of the materials, which can cause deformation or melting processes in the material.

Workshop practice & instructions for action

Use ceramic blasting media for shot blasting in high-precision applications with high pressures and temperatures. Make sure to replace the blasting media regularly (e.g., every 1000 welding operations) to ensure optimal surface quality and a low wear rate. Overheating of the material can be reduced by avoiding excessively long use or by ensuring adequate cooling.
