Ceramic Shot Media
Ceramic blasting media are high-strength spheres of zirconia ceramic that offer high shape stability and low wear in shot blasting. They enable contour-accurate work hardening without iron.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Ceramic blasting media consist of zirconia ceramic, which remains stable at high temperatures and does not react with cast iron. They are used in the shot blasting process (SBP) to work-harden components contour-accurately.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
The use of ceramic blasting media prevents iron from penetrating into the weld, which is especially important for high-strength steels. A missing or defective blasting medium can lead to uneven work hardening and possible cracks.
Workshop practice & instructions for action
• Material: Zirconia ceramic spheres
• Process: Shot blasting process (SBP)
• Application: Contour-accurate work hardening of components
• Caution: Make sure the blasting medium is used correctly to avoid uneven work hardening.
