Ceramic Bead Peening

An iron-free blasting process using high-strength zirconium oxide beads to prevent contamination rust on sensitive alloys. It produces smooth, homogeneous surfaces with favorable compressive residual stresses.

Ceramic bead blasting works with iron-free zirconium oxide beads. The advantage is: no iron remains on the surface, so no foreign rust. That's important for sensitive alloys when you want to weld afterwards. The surface becomes smooth and gets compressive stresses, which is good for component strength. But be careful not to put too much energy in or stay too long in one spot. Then the surface can overharden or distort, and you don't want that before welding. Keep the distance and blasting time so that the surface becomes uniformly matte without eating into it. Then you have a clean, contamination-free surface for welding.
