Ceramic Backing Strip
Ceramic backing bars are dimensionally stable, heat-resistant supports at the weld root that support the molten pool and enable a clean back bead.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Ceramic weldbades use high-temperature-resistant materials like silicon dioxide or aluminum oxide. They protect the weld seam from distortion and enable precise shaping of the root bead.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Without weldbades, the molten pool can distort, leading to uneven weld formation and possible cracks. The support ensures the root bead stays clean and dimensionally stable, which improves weld quality.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Weldbads are placed on before welding and pressed firmly. The size should be chosen so it covers the entire molten pool. For high-temperature-resistant steels (e.g., austenitic), special ceramic weldbades are required.
