Ceramic Weld Backing Strip
A heat-resistant, profiled auxiliary material made of refractory material that is fixed to the back of the joint to shape the weld pool. It is chemically neutral and prevents the melt from sticking.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Ceramic weld pool support consists of a stable, refractory material that does not deform at high temperatures. It fixes the shape of the weld pool and prevents the melt from sticking to the back of the joint or evaporating.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Without ceramic weld pool support, the melt can stick to the back of the joint and cause porosity. This can affect the strength and toughness of the weld. Defective support can also lead to uneven distribution of the melt, causing unbalanced stresses and possible cracks.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use ceramic weld pool support at high temperatures or when precise shaping of the weld pool is required. Fix the support firmly and check before welding that it is correctly positioned. Ensure the material is not damaged and that it does not deform during cooling.
