notch sensitivity
Notch sensitivity describes how strongly a material reacts to stress concentrations. It indicates whether and how quickly cracks can form.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
A material under dynamic load reacts to geometric stress peaks. The higher the notch-crack sensitivity, the faster and stronger cracks form.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
A high notch factor can lead to premature cracks and loss of toughness. This affects the service life and reliability of the component.
Workshop practice & instructions
When welding, it is important to ensure a fluid weld pool to avoid pores. Cooling steps should be controlled to minimize notch-crack sensitivity. For materials with high notch sensitivity, special welding processes such as gas welding should be used.
