Conventional annealing

General term for thermal treatments involving slow cooling to eliminate casting or forming structures. The process serves for homogenization and facilitates machinability.

In classic annealing, you heat the workpiece evenly and then let it cool very slowly in the oven. This makes the structure soft and homogeneous, and internal stresses are relieved. If you cool too quickly after welding or with hard material, the steel becomes hard and brittle again and can crack. So: let it cool down nice and slowly, then it can be machined well and has proper toughness.
