Low-Load Hardness Testing

Low-force hardness testing is a special Vickers test with low load levels to analyze thin layers or local microstructural constituents. It requires careful specimen preparation by grinding and polishing.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The low-load hardness test uses a microscopic pyramidal indenter that penetrates the metal under low load. The depth of penetration is measured and used to determine hardness.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

This test is particularly suitable for thin layers or special microstructures, such as in the weld seam or with special fillers. Incorrect preparation can lead to inaccurate results and increase the risk of measurement errors.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use a load of 1-5 kg for the test. The sample must be precisely cut, ground, and polished. The penetration depth is measured under microscopic control. Ensure uniform load application and correct alignment of the pyramidal indenter.
