Knoop hardness test

The Knoop hardness test is a microhardness method with an elongated rhombus diamond pyramidal indenter that produces shallow indentations. It is used for brittle materials such as ceramics or thin surface layers.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The Knoop hardness test uses an elongated rhombus diamond pyramidal indenter that penetrates deeply and flatly into the material under low load. This provides a precise hardness measurement at specific points.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

The Knoop hardness test is especially suitable for brittle or delicate materials, such as ceramics or thin surface layers. Improper handling can lead to inaccurate results, compromising the reliability of the hardness measurement.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use the Knoop hardness tester with an indenter of 100 µm². Press with a load of 2.5 kg and perform the measurement under a microscope. The test should be conducted in a clean environment to prevent inaccurate results.
