Nodal crack
A crack at the junction of multiple welds due to constraint forces. Repair immediately.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism
Nodular cracks form when multiple welds converge at a point and stress each other. The combined constraint forces can overstress the metal, leading to cracking.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Nodular cracks can cause severe stress concentrations and structural failure. They induce mechanical interactions that damage the material and reduce component life.
Workshop Practice & Procedures
Avoid nodule formation by carefully planning the welding sequence. Use adequate filler material and ensure uniform stress distribution. If a nodular crack is detected, repair immediately to prevent further damage.
