Cobalt solid solution effect

The cobalt solid solution effect increases high-temperature strength and hot hardness in high-alloy materials through dissolved cobalt in the solid solution. It alters the stacking fault energy and inhibits recovery.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Dissolved cobalt in the mixed crystal affects the atomic structure of the metal by increasing the stacking fault energy. This prevents the formation of defects and improves strength at high temperatures.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The cobalt mixed crystal effect is especially important in high-alloy materials such as superalloys. It increases hardness and hot hardness, which stabilizes the material at high temperatures. However, missing or too little cobalt can cause strength to drop at high temperatures and lead to cracking.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To make the most of the cobalt mixed crystal effect, make sure the welding process runs at the right temperatures and times. For superalloys, check the hardness after welding to make sure the cobalt mixed crystal effect is active.
