Grain Size Inhomogeneity

Grain inhomogeneity is the occurrence of different grain sizes within a metal, leading to local stress concentrations and affecting mechanical performance.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Grain inhomogeneity arises from non-uniform plastic deformation followed by incomplete recrystallization. This leads to a variety of grain sizes within the metal.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

This inhomogeneity can lead to local stress peaks and thus to cracks or fractures under mechanical load. It increases susceptibility to hot cracking and reduces the overall strength of the material.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To minimize grain inhomogeneity, it is important to ensure uniform plastic deformation and complete recrystallization. This can be achieved through controlled welding processes and suitable post-treatment methods.
