Soldering Iron Application

Manual soft soldering where thermal energy is supplied locally via a heated metallic soldering iron. It is primarily used in electrical engineering.

Watch out when soldering: The iron heats the metal, but it doesn't flow together like in welding. The solder melts and joins the parts, the base material stays solid. If you apply too much heat or stay on too long, you'll warp the parts or lift the copper trace. Move the iron calmly and evenly so the heat spreads, and make sure the parts fit together cleanly before soldering. You know the temperature is right when the solder flows cleanly and shines, not getting mushy or beading up.
