Continuous Cooling Transformation Diagram for Welding

The continuous CCT diagram shows phase transformations during continuous cooling of steel. It helps determine weld properties and avoid cracking.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

The continuous CCT (Cooling Transformation) diagram visualizes how steel's structure changes during continuous cooling. It shows temperatures and times where different crystal states (like ferrite, austenite, or martensite) form.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

The diagram is essential for optimizing welding parameters. Wrong cooling can lead to dangerous structures, like martensite (too hard and crack-prone) or excessive grain growth (reduces toughness). It helps avoid hot cracks and other quality issues in the weld.

Workshop practice & instructions

To use the diagram effectively, measure actual cooling times and temperatures during welding precisely. Match these values against the diagram to ensure you get the desired structure. For thick steels or high stress levels, careful cooling is a must.
