Grain Refinement by Aluminum

The generation of fine aluminum nitrides that act as nucleation sites for solidification and prevent uncontrolled grain growth at high temperatures.

Aluminum is used in welding as a deoxidizer and for grain refinement. It binds oxygen in the weld pool and prevents porosity. At the same time, it forms fine particles that act as nuclei for a fine-grained structure. This improves the toughness of the weld and reduces the risk of cracking. You add it to the filler metal or directly into the weld pool, but be careful: too much aluminum makes the structure hard and brittle.
