Grain Refinement Efficiency
Measure of the ability of added inoculants to provide numerous heterogeneous nucleation sites during solidification and produce a fine-grained cast structure. A fine grain improves both the strength and toughness of the material.
Inoculants like silicon or titanium ensure that many small grains form during solidification. This makes the structure fine-grained and thus tougher and stronger. But be careful: if you overdo it, the melt solidifies too quickly and you get a hard, brittle structure prone to hot cracking. So dose the additives cleanly and adjust the cooling to get a uniform, fine grain.
