Grain Boundary Carbide Network

A network of carbides along the austenite grain boundaries that increases brittleness and reduces impact toughness.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The grain boundary carbide network forms due to the concentration of carbides at the boundaries between different austenite grains. These carbides are very hard and can impair the mechanical properties of the metallurgy.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A strong grain boundary carbide network leads to increased brittleness of the weld and can cause hot cracking and fracture. Impact toughness is reduced, which shortens the component's service life.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To minimize the grain boundary carbide network, carefully select welding materials and processes. If necessary, apply post-weld treatments such as austenitizing or tempering to improve mechanical properties.
