Spheroidization
The thermal process of transforming lamellar cementite structures into spherical globules to optimize formability and machinability.
When soft annealing, you transform the lamellar cementite in the steel into fine globules. This makes the steel softer and easier to machine. If you weld the steel later, you heat the zone strongly – that can change the fine globules again and mess up the hardness. So keep the heat input low and let the part cool slowly, otherwise it will become brittle or crack.
