Grain Growth

The enlargement of individual crystal grains within a metal matrix subjected to prolonged or excessive thermal exposure, reducing toughness.

Grain growth happens when you heat the material too much or cool it too slowly. The grains in the structure become coarse, and the part loses toughness and strength. Especially when welding, this is a problem if you put in too much heat or don't dissipate the heat fast enough. So keep the heat input as low as possible and don't let the weld cool too slowly, then the grains stay fine.
