Grain Growth Inhibition

Prevention of crystallite coarsening at high temperatures through finely distributed foreign particles that mechanically block grain boundaries.

Grain growth in the weld metal is something you need to keep an eye on. If the weld becomes too coarse, toughness suffers and you get cracks. That mainly happens when you put in too much heat or the cooling is too slow. The remedy is finely distributed foreign particles in the material that slow down grain growth. They keep the crystallites small and the weld retains its strength. So pay attention to the right material choice and proper cooling, then the structure stays fine and stable.
