Aluminum oxide blasting
Corundum blasting is abrasive blasting with extremely hard aluminum oxide particles for intensive roughening and cleaning. It creates an optimal surface for subsequent coatings.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Corundum blasting consists of high-hardness aluminum oxide particles injected at high speed onto the material being processed. These particles abrade and scrape away surface material, leading to roughening and cleaning.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
The intense roughening from corundum blasting improves surface substrate quality, leading to better adhesion of subsequent coatings or spray layers. However, excessive roughening can contaminate the material or damage its surface, which can lead to weld defects such as porosity or poorer mechanical properties.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use corundum blasting before applying coatings or spray layers to clean and smooth the surface. Make sure the blast is not too strong, to avoid damaging the material. An optimal setting is typically a speed of 50 to 100 m/s with a dose of 30 to 50 g/min.
