Crater end crack

Crater crack is a star- or longitudinal-shaped crack at the arc end point due to incomplete crater filling and unfavorable stresses. It leads to further cracks.

Physicochemical Working Principle

During welding, a crater forms that contracts as it cools. If it is not completely filled or if unfavorable stresses occur, cracks form at the arc end point.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Crater end cracking leads to further crack propagation and can impair weld strength. It increases the likelihood of hot cracks and metal failure.

Shop Practice & Action Instructions

To prevent crater end cracks, pay attention to correct welding parameters. Ensure that the crater is completely filled and stress conditions are favorable. Use appropriate filler materials and control the cooling steps closely.
