Crater pipe pore

Crater pore is a funnel-shaped void at the weld end, caused by insufficient end crater filling and too rapid arc breaking. It promotes crack formation at the weld end.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Crater pores form when the end crater isn't fully filled and the arc breaks off too quickly. This causes incomplete melting of the steel at the weld end, creating a funnel-shaped cavity.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Crater pores promote cracking at the weld end and can lead to hot cracks and failure of the weld. They also reduce mechanical properties like strength and durability.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid crater pores, fill the end crater completely and let the arc break off slowly. This can be achieved by optimizing welding parameters. A typical time for arc break-off is 0.5 to 1 second.
