Crater pipe trace

Crater trace is an open, line-shaped depression in the run-out area of the weld pool. It arises from incomplete volume compensation when the arc stops and tends to crack.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The crater track forms when the metal isn't fully compensated during arc stop. This causes uneven stresses and an open depression in the runoff area.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Crater tracks can lead to cracks and distortion in the weld. They enlarge stress zones and increase susceptibility to hot cracking and failure under mechanical load.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid crater tracks, ensure proper volume compensation during arc stop. Make sure the metal fully cools and no stresses build up. Use a suitable protective coating or film in the runoff area.
