Kroll Process

A metallurgical reduction process for producing titanium and zirconium sponge through the reaction of their chlorides with molten magnesium.

The Kroll process is a method for producing titanium sponge. Titanium tetrachloride is reduced with magnesium, leaving a porous metal sponge. This is melted down and further processed. For welding, the sponge itself is not a direct filler material. It is the starting product for titanium semi-finished products. When welding titanium, you have to pay attention to clean surfaces and good shielding gas coverage, otherwise the material becomes brittle. The exact settings depend on the alloy and the sheet thickness, there is no general recipe.
