Face-centered cubic lattice

A close-packed crystal structure with atoms at the cube corners and face centers, characteristic of austenite.

The austenitic lattice is the structure in which steel is present in the weld pool during welding. In normal structural steel, it transforms back on cooling, as you know. It becomes critical with rapid cooling, because hard, crack-prone martensite can form – preheating helps there.
