Face-centered cubic lattice (FCC)
The face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice has atoms at the corners and face centers of a cube. It is highly dense and has many slip planes, resulting in good formability.
How It Works (Physics & Chemistry)
The face-centered cubic lattice is a cube with atoms at the corners and in the center of each face. This structure allows many slip planes that can easily slide over each other.
Why It Matters & Risks When Welding
The high formability of the fcc lattice leads to low hardness and toughness. With wrong cooling, you can get a fine structure with high crack content, which hurts part life.
Shop Practice & What to Do
When welding steels with fcc lattice, controlled cooling is key. Avoid fast cooling because it can cause fine structures and high crack content. Recommended cooling times are between 5 and 20 seconds per cm³ of material.
