Face-centered cubic crystal lattice
A lattice type featuring atoms at the corners and centers of all cube faces, present in austenitic alloys. It is characterized by a high number of slip systems and excellent formability.
Right, I mixed that up. Austenite has a face-centered cubic lattice, ferrite is the body-centered cubic one. When welding austenite, you've got to keep the heat input in check, otherwise you'll get carbide precipitation or hot cracking. Air cooling is totally enough there; a furnace is more for ferritic steels.
