Body-centered cubic lattice (BCC)

The body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice has atoms at the corners and in the center of the cube. It is typical for ferrite at room temperature and influences toughness and strength.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

BCC structure consists of a cube with atoms at all eight corners and one at the center. This gives a moderate packing factor of about 68%.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

BCC is typical for ferrite at room temperature and affects steel properties like toughness and strength. Too fast cooling can transform BCC into martensite, raising hardness and crack risk.

Workshop Practice & Actions

To avoid or control BCC during welding, watch the cooling steps. Use slow cooling after welding to keep ferrite and minimize crack risk.
