Copper as precipitation hardener

Addition of copper to generate fine Cu-rich precipitates during specific heat treatment to increase tensile strength.

Copper in steel acts through fine precipitates that harden the structure. When welding, the amount is crucial: too little gives no hardening, too much makes the material brittle and crack-prone. So you have to keep an eye on the copper content and run the heat treatment cleanly so that the precipitates can form properly. If you manage that, you get a hard but still workable structure.
