Copper Precipitation Hardening

The coherent precipitation of copper particles in specific alloy systems through thermal post-treatment. This leads to a significant increase in strength while maintaining formability.

Copper precipitation hardening is used to make aluminum alloys stronger. When welding, you have to be careful because the heat messes up the structure and the strength in the weld area is lost. The exact temperatures and times depend on the alloy – check the data sheet for what the manufacturer specifies. If you want to re-harden the parts after welding, you have to run the full heat treatment, otherwise the zone stays soft.
