Copper-Beryllium Age Hardening Mechanism
Precipitation process of nanometric beryllium-rich zones in a copper matrix during heat treatment, yielding peak strength and conductivity values in non-ferrous applications.
Copper beryllium can be hardened by heat treatment. This forms finely distributed beryllium precipitates in the copper, making the material significantly stronger. The exact temperatures and times for solution annealing and subsequent aging depend on the alloy – be sure to check the data sheet. If you need to weld the part, that's a hot topic: the heat input destroys the condition again. After welding, the component must be solution annealed and aged again, otherwise it stays soft at the weld and you get cracks or fractures.
