Copper-Beryllium Precipitation Hardening Behavior

Thermal aging process in which extremely high mechanical strengths and wear resistance are achieved through the controlled precipitation of beryllium phases.

Copper beryllium is hardened by a controlled heat treatment in which fine beryllium phases precipitate. When welding, you have to be careful not to destroy this heat treatment. If the material cools too quickly or incorrectly, it becomes hard and brittle, which can lead to cracks. You have to control the cooling of the weld so that the structure does not overage or embrittle. When in doubt, post-weld heat treatment helps to restore the desired properties.
