Copper-Nickel Alloy Stress Corrosion Cracking
The damaging crack formation in Cu-Ni materials under the simultaneous action of mechanical tensile stresses and specific corrosive agents, particularly ammonia. Crack propagation occurs predominantly transgranularly.
Copper-nickel alloys can suffer stress corrosion cracking when they come into contact with ammonia-containing media under tensile stress. This doesn't only happen during welding, but also in service. When welding itself, the main problem is hot cracking if you put in too much heat or the material is contaminated. Keep the surface clean and grease-free, then you usually won't have problems. After welding, just let it cool slowly, then the structure stays calm.
