Copper Backing Bar

A thermally highly conductive auxiliary device used for shaping the root side and rapid heat dissipation during single-sided welding processes. It prevents the molten material from sagging through.

The copper backing bar is basically a copper block that you put behind the root. The copper draws the heat away quickly and prevents the molten weld metal from falling through or leaking out. When you weld from one side and can't get to the back, it's your best friend. It's important that the backing is clean and fits tightly against the workpiece, otherwise you won't get a clean root. Make sure it doesn't burn away or warp from the heat, then it will last for several uses.
