Copper-Silver Softening Resistance
Alloying addition of minor amounts of silver to copper to increase thermal stability and recrystallization temperature in electrical contacts.
Silver in copper acts as a grain refiner and stabilizes the structure. If you have too much silver in it, the structure can become coarse and brittle, leading to cracks and corrosion. When welding, you have to be careful not to overheat the alloy and keep the melt short, otherwise the silver burns out and the structure deteriorates. Weld it under shielding gas to keep the alloy clean.
