Copper thermal conductivity coefficient

The copper thermal conductivity value describes how well copper conducts heat. It leads to rapid cooling and requires preheating.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

Copper has a very high thermal conductivity, meaning it conducts heat very quickly. This causes the weld to cool fast and the structure to coarsen.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Fast cooling can lead to a fine structure and increased toughness, but it also causes stress and possible cracks in the material. Additionally, fast cooling can cause uneven grain coarsening in the joint zone, reducing strength.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To minimize the negative effects of fast cooling, preheating is essential. The weld should be cooled slowly to achieve a uniform structure and optimal strength. Recommended cooling method: slow cooling in a furnace or under protected air draft.
