Copper-Tin Dendritic Segregation
Formation of concentration gradients within dendritic arms during the solidification of bronzes, caused by the differing partition coefficient of tin. This often requires homogenization annealing.
When bronze cools, the tin can distribute unevenly in the structure – that's called segregation. It happens because the alloy doesn't solidify homogeneously, but copper-rich areas form first. This creates zones with different hardness and strength, which can lead to cracks during welding or under load. If you have to weld such a part, anneal the material thoroughly beforehand so the components distribute evenly again. Then let it cool slowly, otherwise you'll have the same problem again.
