Copper-Tin Gunmetal Solidification

Dendritic crystallization pathway of leaded or lead-free CuSn alloys prone to macroscopic segregation and microporosity due to wide solidification intervals.

Red brass is a copper-tin alloy that tends to segregate during solidification. That means the alloy components don't distribute evenly but partially separate. This can make the weld porous and lose strength.

When welding, you need to pay attention to a calm, controlled heat input. If you keep the melt too hot or liquid for too long, segregation gets worse. Keep the heat zone small and let the material solidify quickly but evenly.

If you manage that, you'll get a dense weld that doesn't crack or corrode as quickly.
