Copper-Tin Gunmetal Structure

A heterogeneous structure consisting of alpha solid solution and eutectoid phases, optimized for tribological loads in sliding bearing construction.

Red brass is a copper-tin alloy that is well suited for plain bearings because it is hard and yet smooth-running. When welding, you have to be careful not to overheat the material, otherwise you'll burn the structure and the bearing will become porous or brittle. Weld with as little heat as possible and let the part cool slowly, preferably in sand or a thermal insulation. If you cool too quickly, the material will become brittle and won't withstand the loads in operation.
