Copper Inclusion
Copper inclusion is a foreign particle inclusion of copper that arises from abrasion of contact tubes or holding devices. It can lead to cracking at elevated temperatures.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Copper inclusion means the incorporation of copper into the weld metal. At elevated temperatures, copper reacts with the steel and forms a chemical compound that alters the structure.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
Copper inclusion can cause cracking, especially at elevated temperatures. The copper reaction can impair the steel behavior and reduce the strength of the weld.
Workshop practice & instructions
Avoid contact of copper fixtures with the weld metal. If copper inclusions are detected, perform a thorough cleaning and check the weld for cracks.
