Paint Adhesion

Paint adhesion is a measure of the bond between a paint layer and the underlying metal. Poor adhesion leads to paint peeling and corrosion.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Paint adhesion describes how well an organic paint layer holds onto the metallic surface. Good bonding prevents the paint from peeling or coming off.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

Poor paint adhesion can lead to corrosion, as the metal under the paint can come into direct contact with air and water. This can cause cracks and wear of the components.

Workshop practice & instructions

To ensure good paint adhesion, the following measures should be taken:

• Use a paint type that is suitable for the specific metal.

• Make sure the metal surface is clean and free of dirt before applying the paint.

• Apply the paint in a closed environment to avoid moisture and contaminants.
