Longitudinal crack in weld metal
A longitudinal crack runs parallel to the weld and forms due to excessive transverse strains or thermal stresses during cooling.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
A longitudinal crack in the weld metal forms when the structure is stretched too much on cooling – for example through high transverse strain or thermal stresses.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Longitudinal cracks can tear or break the weld metal, especially under load. They lower the mechanical values and raise the risk of cracks or fractures.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Avoid longitudinal cracks through even cooling. Use suitable shielding gases or cooling. Pay attention to limiting the transverse strain and not overloading the material.
