Lanthanum oxide doped tungsten electrode

Lanthanum oxide doped tungsten electrode is an electrode for arc welding that has improved startability and service life due to lanthanum oxides.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

The lanthanum oxides in the tungsten electrode ensure better electrolysis of the steel. They reduce the ignition voltage and improve the melting rate by stabilizing the electrolyte system.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

This electrode leads to a finer ignited start and a homogeneous melting process. It reduces the number of pores and improves the mechanical properties of the weld. However, a lack or overdose of lanthanum oxides can lead to irregular ignitions or too rapid cooling, resulting in cracks or missing fusion zones.

Workshop practice & instructions

Use the electrode for arc welding of steels with high carbon content. Ensure that the lanthanum oxide-doped tungsten electrode is used correctly and the electrolyte system is regularly maintained. An optimal service life is typically 20-30 minutes.
