Laser ablation depth

The depth to which material is ablated by a laser pulse. Depends on energy and absorption of the workpiece.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The laser ablation depth corresponds to the depth of material removal per pulse in ultrashort-pulsed laser cutting. It is determined by the energy delivered into the material and the optical absorption properties.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

An excessively high ablation depth can lead to inaccurate cuts or excessive material loss. Too low a depth slows down cutting and can result in inefficient processes.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To achieve an optimal ablation depth, the laser energy and the material's absorption value should be maintained. A typical ablation depth is about 50 to 100 micrometers per pulse with a laser wavelength of 1064 nm.
