Laser Hybrid Narrow-Gap Welding
Laser hybrid narrow-gap welding combines laser and arc welding in a narrow groove. It reduces heat input and improves weld quality for thick plates.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Laser hybrid narrow-gap welding uses the higher energy of the laser for penetration depth and the filler wire of arc welding to bridge the gap. This is done in an extremely narrow weld gap, resulting in lower heat input.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Reduced heat input minimizes the risk of hot cracking and burn-through. However, incorrect laser or wire feed settings can lead to uneven joints or missing filler material.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use a laser power of 100 to 200 watts and a wire diameter of 1.6 mm. The weld gap should be about 3 to 5 mm wide. Keep the laser torch at a distance of 4 to 6 mm from the workpiece. Set the wire feed force to 20 to 30 newtons. Welding speed is typically 1.5 to 2 m/min.
